No one wants to get a cavity. We’ve all heard why we need to brush, floss and take care of our teeth. From an early age, we’re taught how to care for our teeth to prevent cavities from ever forming. However, even with the best oral healthcare routine, cavities can still form. Luckily, there are ways to slow down the decay process if you get a cavity. Today we’ll talk through five key ways to slow down tooth decay.
What is Cavity Decay Anyways?
Before we talk about slowing down cavity decay, let’s first discuss what cavity decay is.
You may have noticed tiny grey or black spots on your teeth, or a sticky spot that doesn’t seem to go away even after brushing well. These are usually indications that you’ve got a cavity. Cavities are small holes in your teeth that eat away at the tooth’s enamel. Left untreated, cavities can cause considerable pain, sensitivity, decay, and even tooth loss.
How are they caused? Cavities are most often caused by the build-up of sugar monsters also known as plaque (which contains bacteria and acids that are harmful to your teeth’s sensitive structure) on your teeth.
How to Slow Down Cavity Decay
1. Maintain great dental hygiene
At the most basic level, it’s important to brush, floss and rinse with mouthwash on a daily basis. Brushing and flossing at least twice a day and using mouthwash after meals is your best line of defense in preventing plaque buildup and slowing down tooth decay.
2. Use the right toothpaste
While there are a number of fluoride-free toothpastes available, we recommend choosing a fluoride toothpaste if you truly want to prevent cavities. Fluoride is a very powerful compound that can actually reverse cavity progression in the early stages. It also is much more effective at protecting your teeth from other harmful bacteria.
3. Limit sugary foods
We all have a bit of a “sweet tooth,” but if you want to slow down tooth decay, try to reduce the sugary foods you consume on a daily basis. When you do decide indulge, you should brush, floss and rinse with mouthwash as soon as possible to help wash away the harmful sugars from the surface of your teeth.
4. Try natural remedies
There are a number of natural remedies out there that have been proven to reduce cavities. For example, drinking green tea or chewing on liquorice root can help improve your oral health. Interestingly enough, green tea is rich in fluorine, which helps clean the mouth of cavity-causing bacteria; and liquorice root is a natural antimicrobial, which reduces the impact of harmful bacteria in the mouth.
Another more recent trend in oral health is oil-pulling. Recent studies show that oil pulling, particularly when using coconut oil, helps against gingivitis, plaque, and microorganisms that cause bad breath. It also may prevent tooth decay.
