Root Canal Therapy

Inner Tooth Anatomy

Endodontic therapy, better known as “root canal,” treatment, is a proactive way to retain natural teeth and treat chronic toothaches. If your tooth is causing pain or exhibiting symptoms of an abscess, a root canal is preferred over removing the tooth entirely. For gentle root canal therapy in Raleigh, NC, contact our team.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is similar to a filling, but the restoration extends down the hollow canal inside of the root (instead of being restricted to the crown). Since the nerve tissues must be removed, it’s necessary to seal the open canal to prevent reinfection or subsequent abscesses. The procedure helps to preserve the remaining tooth structure and thereby prevent deterioration of the overall tooth anatomy. Otherwise, the remaining structures would naturally resorb (shrink away.)

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

Our Raleigh dentist may recommend a root canal if you have:

An active abscess

Severe decay that reaches the nerve of a tooth

Tooth hypersensitivity

A necrotic nerve

Fractured root

Root Canal Procedure:

Having a root canal is similar to what you’d experience during other routine dental treatments. The tooth is thoroughly numbed to eliminate any discomfort. Sedation dentistry is also available if you like.

Depending on which tooth is being treated, the appointment length can vary. Some teeth have more roots than others, which can impact the complexity of the procedure. Certain teeth are more straightforward, while others require a bit more time.

Following your root canal treatment, your non-vital tooth will be non-responsive to stimuli. We will need to place a protective crown over it to ensure the remaining structure can withstand normal use for years to come.

Are Root Canals Painful?

Root canals are designed to eliminate pain, not cause it. An abscessed tooth can be extremely hypersensitive. If the infection is severe, anesthetic may not work as well. For that reason, it may be necessary to prescribe an antibiotic leading up to your scheduled procedure. As swelling diminishes, the numbing medication can be more effective (eliminating any discomfort when the tooth is treated).

Alternatives To Root Canal Treatment

The only other option besides endodontic therapy is to have the tooth extracted. Although pulling a tooth can provide short-term relief, it leads to ongoing, long-term consequences. Following an extraction, you’ll need to make additional plans to replace the tooth with either a dental implant or dental bridge. Otherwise, the surrounding teeth can begin to tilt out of alignment, entirely changing the way your smile looks.
